Let’s Get Started…

What Colors Make Orange

Did you know that orange is a secondary color?

Making a secondary color usually means combining two primary colors. The primary colors are Blue, Red, and Yellow.

Primary Colors Red Yellow Blue

If you don’t have these primary colors on hand then you can mix other colors to make them.

For example:

Here is a visual chart that can help explain how you can mix colors to make the primary colors.

Additive and Subtractive Color Chart

So in theory you can mix several colors to make orange, even if you don’t have the primary colors on hand.

You would have to take a few steps, but you can still make orange.

Let me explain…

Let’s say you only have the colors Red and Green on hand.

First, you would mix Red and Green to make Yellow.

Second, you can take your new Yellow color and mix it with Red. Now you have Orange!

There are many color combinations that you can use, but as long as you follow the color combos mentioned above you can still get to the color orange.

What Two Colors Make Orange

If you happen to have all three primary colors on hand, then you can make orange by simply mixing Yellow and Red to make Orange.

By leaving out the color blue from the picture, you can create the color orange.

Want A Brighter or Deeper Orange?

Adding shades, various hues, and varieties make orange a more interesting color! Here’s how you can turn your orange into a darker or brighter shade:

We have learned that mixing in yellow and red will create orange. But did you know that you can add redder or more yellow to change it?

what colors make orange

The two most basic orange variations are red-orange and yellow-orange. These two shades are called tertiary colors.

If you have to classify where the tertiary color is in regards to the primary and the secondary colors and the color wheel, we’d have to say that it falls right in between them.

Here is a color chart that displays tertiary colors.

Here’s how you can make red-orange:

– Mix in one part yellow color and two parts of red color. You can also mix in one part red color and one part orange color.

Here’s how you can make yellow-orange:

– Mix in one part of red color and two parts of the yellow color. You can also mix in one part yellow color and one part orange color.

Now, what happens if you add white color or black color to the orange color you have?

Your orange will change values. This means you can control how dark or how light your orange will become by adding a certain amount of white color or black color. Keep in mind that the amount of black or white will determine just how dark or light your orange color becomes.

Lighter oranges usually fall into the tint category, while darker oranges usually fall into the shade category.

You can apply what you’ve learned in plenty of useful ways. For example, if you only have yellow or red paint and you want to get orange, you can just mix in equal parts of red and yellow paint to create true orange!

You can change the value by adding white or black gradually until you get the desired effect. You can also use this in cake frosting or while shaping clay.
