How to Add Widgets to Your Sidebar in WordPress Video Transcript:
Okay so in this video I’m going to show you how to use widgets to add some stuff to your sidebar so it gives it some form and function. Alright, let’s check it out.
Alright! Welcome back! I hope you enjoyed writing some new blog posts and adding some new content to your website. As you can see I’ve been busy adding some new articles. So we kind of filled this up and it looks great. The next thing we want to do is add some content to our sidebar on the right hand side. So we’re going to show you how to do that. You’ll want to go to your dashboard. And you’ll want to click on ‘APPEARANCE’ and see ‘WIDGETS’ so go ahead and click on ‘WIDGETS’. And here we are on the sidebar menu. So basically your main sidebar is your Primary Sidebar. You’ll want to go ahead and click on the down arrow and open this up. The available widgets you have is on the left hand side. And you can basically choose which widget you want to display. In order to do that is select one and then drag it and put it into the sidebar. So for example, I want to have a tag cloud so I want to show that on my sidebar and I’m going to select that and drag it into this box. And if I want to give it a title I’m going to go ahead and call it “Tag Cloud” and I’m going to click ‘SAVE’. The other thing I want to have is I want to have Categories displayed. So I’m going to go ahead and click this categories and drag it inside here. I’m going to this blog, I’ll call this “Article Categories” how about that? And you can display it as a drop down or show how many post counts or show the heirarchy. It’s really up to you how you want to do it. I’m just going to leave it like this. I’m going to click the arrow to minimize this. I want my categories to be above my tag cloud so I’m going to basically drag this on top and that way it will give an order of preference. Maybe a couple of other things I’ll want to do is I want to give the ability to search my blog. So I’m going to give them a search box. I’m going to say “Search the blog” and I’ll click ‘SAVE’. Let’s see if there’s anything else I want to add to my sidebar. Nope, I think that’s it. I’m going to go ahead and leave this the same and I’m going to go ahead and refresh my page to see what this looks like. Okay so there you go! Now you have some cool stuff on your sidebar. People can search the site. Obviously you can see there’s categories here so people can find certain articles related to certain categories and then here’s your tag cloud that’s separated with different articles that are related to these specific subjects. Alright, so I hope you guys enjoyed this quick tutorial on how to add some stuff to your sidebar in WordPress and we’ll see you guys in the next video.
